working at the top of a tree

What’s Creative Sectional Dismantling and Why Is It Done?

If there’s a tree on your property that can’t be felled in the usual way, you might call on a professional to perform creative sectional dismantling. This is when the tree is taken down piece by piece instead of all at once.

Why Would You Have Creative Sectional Dismantling Done?

Creative sectional dismantling is a process that takes a certain level of skill on behalf of the arborist. Because of this, it takes longer and is more expensive than simple felling. But there are good reasons to sectionally dismantle a tree. Here are some.

  • A large, old tree is too close to a building to be felled.
  • The tree is too close to overhead wires or streetlights.
  • The tree is in such bad shape that felling it the usual way is too risky. It may start to shed large branches, split in two, or topple over in an uncontrolled way.
  • The tree is in a place that’s hard for the arborist to access.
  • It’s in a garden or a landscape, and felling it would damage or disturb the plants and other structures around it. The tree may also be in a protected area that would be disrupted if it was simply felled.

How Creative Sectional Dismantling Is Done

Before the arborist starts to work, they’ll have to assess the tree and plan out just how it’s going to be creatively taken down. The job will involve rigging to get into the higher branches, but the job starts with removing limbs from the bottom of the tree. If the tree is in such poor shape that it’s dangerous to even climb it, the arborist may use a mobile elevated work platform, or a MEWP, to access the top of the tree.

The arborist will utilize the usual tools they use for taking down a tree. Besides rigging, equipment includes chainsaws, safety glasses, helmets, work gloves and work boots, a cell phone or walkie-talkie, and a first aid kit for emergencies.

When the lower branches are removed, the arborist climbs to the top of the tree and carefully removes one large limb and its branches at a time. Then, working downward, they’ll slice the trunk into sections until only the stump is left. After this, the arborist and their team will remove the debris. The whole operation can last from a few hours to a day depending on the size, location, and condition of the tree.
